Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) is a government body under telecom commission and is a nodal agency of Department of Telecommunications. It is responsible for drawing standards, general requirements, interface requirements, service requirements and specifications of telecom products, services and networks. It has headquarters in New Delhi. The basic mission of TEC is to develop new specifications and update the old ones to move along with global development.
There are various consultancy agents in India that provide TEC approval certificate. As per Indian Telegraph Rules, 2017 every telecom product needs to be approved by TEC, after undergoing mandatory testing. All telecommunication and IT equipment are subject to Type Approval. It covers all types of Radio Equipment also. TEC provides two approvals:
- Type Approval
- Interface Approval
What is Type Approval?
Type approval is an approval granted to a telecom product or network which will be interfaced with Indian telecom network. Type approval is given only after a proper evaluation and testing of the sample product. The sample product has to comply with the Generic Requirements provided by TEC approval .Separate approvals shall be provided for different products. The sample product should be complete in all respects and should be equipped fully to its maximum capacity or as indicated by the GR. The samples have to be tested in the TEC accredited labs.
Eligibility for Type Approvals
- Manufacturers involved in indigenous production of equipment at any level- CKD or SKD.
- Traders (Indian Companies) importing products from foreign manufacturers.
- Organizations in India with foreign equity, whose objective is to import and sell goods in India.
- Foreign manufacturers having their establishment wholly in India for trading activities.
The general steps of application for obtaining type approval are:
- Application from the manufacturer for approval along with the prescribed fees
- Review of documentation
- Approval of designs
- Review of the test program
- Evaluation and testing of the product
- Review of test reports, issued by accredited labs
- Issuance of the certificate, if reports are satisfactory.
Once the certificate is granted, it will be valid for five years and approval will also be hosted on the internet.
Documents required for obtaining Type Approval are:
- Technical description of product or equipment
- Radio, EMC and Safety test reports from accredited labs.
- Declaration of Conformity from the manufacturer of the device or product.
- Declaration of Conformity from third parties
- The user manual of the product
- Photos of the equipment or product
- For countries requiring a local representative, an Authorization Letter.
- Each page of documents should be signed and stamped by the authorized signatory.
